The story of the Kuleshov effect actually comes from an experiment. The film showed an actor with a completely neutral face, but then spliced in a bowl of soup, the corpse of a child, and a woman in a bikini. Audiences talked about this guy’s amazing acting ability, how very subtle he was, but actually the actor never saw any of the images nor was he told that he should be seeing anything at all.
