The images in this post were created primarily by separating and assembling multiple images—making selection, silhouetting, editing the edges, and working with multiple layers to create a photographic montage. The image above is made from a portrait of Drew Faust while she was on Penn faculty (currently president of Harvard) and a team picture of the Penn swimming team – both from the Penn University Image Archive. I used the Quick Selection Tool (tutorial here) and Quick Mask to separate Faust from her background, cleaned up the edges with Refine Edge, and placed the silhouetted Faust in a new layer with the swim team.
